This is Superintendent Brenda Longshore with an important update on the school district response to COVID-19.
STUDENTS RETURN TO CLASSROOMS POSTPONED THROUGH APRIL 15
Late this afternoon Governor DeSantis announced that students will not return to their school campuses through April 15th, 2020. This return date will be assessed by the Governor and Commissioner of Education as we move closer to that date.
VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION BEGINS MONDAY MARCH 30
Beginning March 30th we will be utilizing virtual learning for the delivery of instruction in Highlands County schools. We have a plan in place as well as mechanisms for delivery. Some aspects are in the final stages of development, however detailed information can be found here:
STATE ASSESSMENTS CANCELLED
Per the direction of Governor DeSantis and Commissioner Corcoran, all Florida state assessments are cancelled for the current school year.
SCHOOL RELATED EVENTS CANCELLED
All school-related extra-curricular events are cancelled through Wednesday, April 15th.
This is a rapidly changing situation across the state and I thank you for your patience. We will share information as soon as we receive it and we will keep you informed as new K-12 education directives are given by the Governor and Commissioner of Education.

** Updated Meal Menus **
MEAL UPDATE: The guidelines we must follow for no-cost meal distribution have changed, please read carefully. If you ARE NOT ABLE to have your child with you to pick up meals, a process is now in place which will allow you to REGISTER FOR MEAL PICK UP so you may do so without your child present.
Please contact our food services department at 863-471-5676 and they will walk you through the process. You can also email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Remember- no-cost meals can be picked up between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm at any of our school campuses Monday through Friday. You do not need to go to the school your child attends. Pick up is through drive-through or walk-up service and is free for any child 18 and under.
Virtual learning begins March 30th.
In the wake of the Coronavirus, businesses are offering many free resources for students.
Because instruction will be home based for now, several companies have opened up their wifi free. Here are some resources that are available:

- Spectrum is offering households with college students or K-12 students who have no Internet or low Internet speeds. Please call 844-488-8395 to get started.

PC's for People - People is offering high speed 4G LTE internet service starting at $15.00 per month.
